12-14-09 PITMAN, GLASSBORO FIREFIGHTERS JOIN TOY DRIVE
Glassboro and Pitman firefighters recently teamed up with Philadelphia cheesesteak pro Tony Luke to collect toys for kids being hospitalized at St. Christopher's during the holiday season.
"A few weeks ago, several of our members and members of the Pitman Fire Department visited Tony Luke's restaurant after one of our drills and while we were there, the owner (Tony) discussed a charity event in which he was participating," said Glassboro firefighter Rich Gianforcaro. "He does a lot of charity work, but for this one he had placed a box out and was also purchasing toys for kids at St. Christopher's Hospital. The hospital was still looking for about 75 toys, mostly for teenage kids because Tony Luke's had brought in a lot for the younger ones."
So, both fire departments put out collection boxes and received more than $600 in two weeks, which they used to purchase gender-neutral teen-appropriate toys and games. The firefighters delivered the toys to the restaurant last Friday and the toys are now in the hands of the hospital staff who will wrap them and present them to the children on Monday.
"I've been here three years and we've always done something around the holidays, purchasing gifts for kids in the community, but this is the first year we got involved with this event," said Gianforcaro. "It's unfortunate that these children have to spend their holidays in the hospital so if we can do something to bring them a little joy, it's something we will try to do."
Gianforcaro said a few of the firefighters plan to visit the hospital on Monday for the presentation and possibly even bring an antique fire truck along to surprise the kids.
"It's something we hope to be involved with for years to come," he said
